Aircraft
Today, Golden Air Flyg AB is the largest flight operator in Europe using only SAAB aircraft. Below, you’ll find some facts about our aircraft.
SAAB340B
The SAAB340B was built in Linköping, and when production of this aircraft was discontinued in September 1999, 459 aircraft had seen the light of day. Up until the year 2000, this aircraft has transported approximately 166 million passengers, a task that has been carried out by around 35 operators of the SAAB340, all across the globe. This aircraft is considered to be one of the world’s safest passenger aircraft, due to it having been involved in very few serious accidents. The aircraft belongs to the category turboprop, which means that it has a jet engine driving a propeller. In this way, the jet engine’s reliability is combined with the propeller’s advantages. A propeller-driven aircraft requires shorter runways for take-off and landing than a similar, jet-driven aircraft, which makes it particularly suitable for flying to and from airports with shorter runways. It features two engines, each with a maximum performance of 1870 hp. Should an engine for any reason fail, the power of the remaining engine suffices to keep the aircraft airborne and   even provide enough thrust for ascent - a requirement the authorities have instated for all passenger aircraft in order to obtain certification. We normally travel at an altitude of 17-18 000 feet, which corresponds to 5200-5500 meters, at a speed of 270 knots or 500 km/h, in windless conditions. At this kind of altitude, however, the wind speeds can be quite high, up to 75 m/s, and there have been cases in which forceful tailwinds have enabled cruising speeds of up to 700 km/h! Where fuel consumption is concerned, we can mention that the flight between Trollhättan and Bromma requires approximately 500 litres of kerosene, i.e. 12.5 litres per 10 km. If the aircraft holds its maximum capacity of 36 passengers, the fuel consumption would correspond to 0.35 litres per 10 km per passenger. At this point, Golden Air Flyg AB owns 11 SAAB340 aircraft. Normally, the SAAB340 is operated for flights with a flight time of about 1 hour, but they have even been chartered for flights to Kiev and the Shetland Islands.

SAAB2000
The SAAB2000 comprises the newest addition to our fleet. This aircraft was also built in Linköping, but due to the demand for turboprop aircraft decreasing, and the increasing interest on the market for smaller jet aircraft, SAAB in Linköping decided to discontinue production after having delivered 59 aircraft, of which most were purchased by Crossair in Switzerland. The SAAB2000 is more than just a long version of the SAAB340, it’s an entirely new aircraft in which only the cabin is identical to that of the 340. Still today, the SAAB2000 is a leader in its class, a particularly successful combination of the very best there is to be had with respect to performance and cockpit layout. The SAAB2000 has, contrary to the 340, so-called drop-down oxygen masks for all passengers in the cabin, which resulted in it being certified to fly up to an altitude of 31,000 feet, or 9,400 m. The aircraft is equipped with two   Allison engines with a maximum output of 4,152 hp each. The engines are slightly modified C-130’s, which are also used by the air force, in an aircraft known as the "Hercules", and have ample power to perform their task. In the SAAB2000, this means a performance that is comparable to jet power. The cruising speed is 370 knots or 685 km/h. We usually choose to travel at an altitude of 26-28,000 feet or 7,900-8,500 m. Due to the number of revolutions of the propeller being lower than on the SAAB340, i.e. 950 rpm as compared to 1230 rpm on the 340, as well as the SAAB2000 being equipped with ANR (Active Noise Reduction) passengers experience this aircraft as being very silent. At this point in time, Golden Air owns five SAAB2000s. The aircraft, in Golden Air’s version, rooms 50 passengers, but there are reputed to be flight operators that have versions with 58 seats.
